As we celebrate the passage of the Health Insurance Reform Bill we have to cry for Arizona. The Republicans in the Arizona Legislature have done everything they could to send Arizona down the wrong track. They cut Education and then cut education again both K-12 and Higher Education and then they cut healthcare. About 47,000 kids have been cut from Kid’s Care and about 310,000 adults have been cut from Medicaid (AHCCCS). In the meantime the Governor and Republican Legislature is spending $8.3 to hold a special election rather than raise a 1% sale tax on there own and most recently they authorized the suing of the Federal Government to fight the new Health Reform Bill. Apparently they don’t want healthy Arizonans. Most legal minds said they can’t win but with 13 other states suing, why spend unnecessary funds to get into the act. If they win, Arizona will get the benefits without wasting money we don’t have. So it is just politics, who can be more right-wing.
Now it is up to us. We must fight to win the Governorship with Terry Goddard and at least one of the Arizona legislative houses.
We have two candidates running for Secretary of State (SoS), Chris Deschene and Sam Wercinski. Since this position has a lot of control over our elections it is important to elect a Democrat. The SoS also succeeds the Governor if he doesn’t complete his term.
There are three candidates for Attorney General, David Lujan, Felicia Rotellini and Vince Rabago. Vote for your favorite in the primary and then support the winner in November. I am sure you don’t want Andrew Thomas or Tom Horne!
We also have a great candidate running for Treasurer, Andrei Cherney. He has real ideas of how to get Arizona out of the mess it is in. He will be the DFA speaker at our June meeting. Al Gore said about Andrei, “Andrei is one of our nation’s brightest leaders for the future and I know that, as State Treasurer, he will be bold, thoughtful, and tireless in using every tool at his disposal to generate economic growth.”
Don’t forget to vote all the way down the ballot – we have a candidate for Mine Inspector, Manuel Cruz and even a candidate for Water Commission, Arif Kazmi.
You can also come to our DFA monthly meetings and get to know our Democratic candidates and help us get them elected. We need to register voters, get Democrats to sign up for mail-in ballots (PEVL) and become poll workers and observers.
